Job Description

This position is responsible for organizing and performing the necessary work related to the care of the pets and palatability or nutritional testing under general supervision.
  1. Knowledge of and compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and all procedures and protocols in the Nestlé Purina R&D Petcare Manual
  2. Adherence to Nestlé Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  3. Assign rooms in data management system and process palatability/nutrition tests
  4. Perform nutritional, palatability or behavior tests according to the protocol submitted in the request
  5.  Accurately and reliably record data as outlined by the requesting project scientist
  6.  Organize incoming food for tests
  7.  Perform grooming as necessary
  8.  Obtain animal body weights/body condition scoring (BCS) as required
  9.  Provide socialization programs for pets
  10.  Assist with care for and monitor growth of puppies or kittens as needed
  11.  Report to the veterinary staff sick or unusual behavior observed in the pets
  12.  Report any broken or damaged equipment, item or physical area
  13.  Perform minor troubleshooting of facility equipment
  14.  Perform all necessary cleaning and sanitation duties to maintain a safe, clean and  sanitary work  environment
  15.  Assist with minor veterinary procedures (e.g. exams)
  16.  Assist with breeding of pets as needed
  17.  Practice safety in the work area
  • Participate in Scientist/Visitor Orientations
  • Assist with training of new team members


JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):
  • High School Diploma (or GED)
  • Minimum 2 years of animal handling experience or BS degree in Animal Science/Zoology or related field
  • Proficiency in PetCare Specialist functions
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team
  • Good interpersonal, communication, organization, and math skills
  • Computer literacy


  •  Advanced training or experience in animal science, veterinary technology, or animal handling, grooming, or behavior
  • Knowledge to act as back-up for non-standard trials
  • Cross-train in other groups ( NT vs. PAL, Cat vs. Dog)
